Remembering Elliott Erwitt.

— When you hear of Elliott Erwitt as a practicing photographer you’re aware of the fact that that name was one of those always aligned amidst the perceived greats of the medium. Up there with people like Alfred Stieglitz, Cartier Bresson, Avedon……

Definitely one of the great photojournalist of his time. Perhaps for all time. I must admit that initially pass the point of name recognition, his work never quite resonated with me personally. However, with some age and experience, taste and perspectives change. Suddenly I could appreciate the complexities of the work. The diversity in the subject matter. The underlying humor…something I initially found quite camp. Yet only later realizing the patience and awareness that one must take simply to capture the pure subtle of those moments and have them appear overt!…. The longevity. Something to be admired by any artist, in any field.

There are always situations in which being the darling within a space can make one a perceived pariah. Often overlooked as easy and dismissive. One could say that Elliott Erwitt was sort of like my “Taylor Swift”…..cool while I’m at the mall….but I’m I gonna play this at home?!…..Yet if you’re an astute artist and even better yet a student of artist……you learn to appreciate the diligence of the craft.

The dedication to the art form…..in those most simplest of ways....ways that ultimately create great amounts of success…..which in turn leads you back to the art and into full appreciation. Able to notice....and see things that you weren’t able to see before. Taylor Swift not only has mega hits but those hits are catchy songs. Regardless if I love them or not, I know them.

Elliott Erwitt was a legend….Like a great jazz drummer for over 50 years, his timing was perfect.

God Bless.
