35mm.

— Part of your practice as an artist of any sort should include attempts at evolving. Which I often try to do as much as I can. I’d rented a 35mm lens from a friend. In an effort to channel my own version of Alex Webb. I felt like new shoes……

At times there were discomforts. I traditionally often shoot on lenses not wider than a 50mm. However lately I’ve felt a bit constricted with that format and have wanted to go wider for some time.

It’s not that I’ve never shot with a 35mm. I’ve just never been very comfortable with using it day-to-day. As I mentioned, in a lot of ways it felt like something new. Which I welcome and I guess comes with great excitement.

I must admit — it’s generally harder for me to work as I’m often used to. Generally, my style of street shooting is rooted in movement. I’m a hunter much more than I am a stalker. I don’t have the patience to wait around for an image for a prolonged period. Although at times there are moments where it’s of course very necessary. Yet I prefer to anticipate moments and have them unfold before me and try my best to blend in.

The 35mm lens makes you more noticeable. It’s a bit more girthy than the traditional lenses I use. That’s ok. I guess with more practice I’ll become more stealthy. I appreciate how much I’m able to get within my frame. There are times when I feel the need for more of a palette. More of a scene entailed and this gives me that.

Of course, it’s a matter of evolving. As they say — “You can’t get there from there!”….One has to practice and practice until perfect…..Here’s to practice.
